Bad office design can inflict stress on workers and destroy productivity. Good office design is essential if you want to keep everyone happy and well-adjusted. Your employees spend many hours at the office every day. You want them to be as comfortable as possible. Here are just a few ways bad office design can ruin productivity and stress out your employees:

  • Old and uncomfortable furniture: Old and uncomfortable chairs can leave your employees with aches and pains when they leave the office at the end of the day. Help them stay stress free and comfortable by investing in quality office chairs.
  • Bad lighting: Poor or low lighting can be damaging to your employee’s eyes, prohibitive to concentration, and has been shown to decrease cognitive functioning. Both having quality lighting inside and access to natural light will help your employees stay alert and healthy.
  • Giving employees no place to socialize: Not allowing employees the ability to interact and socialize occasionally can decrease team cohesion and general sanity. People need to have the opportunity to socialize if they so choose, if only for a few moments a day.
  • Over reliance on the open floor: On the other hand, many offices have been following the open floor concept, popularized by companies such as Facebook, Google, and Bloomberg. While the open floor layout gives employees the opportunity to easily work together and socialize, it is also distracting and stifling for many others. Many workers have found that open floor concepts actually decrease their productivity. Use a mix between open floor and traditional designs to give employees options.
